Twitter poised to break 140-character limit
In a tweet on Tuesday, Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a screenshot of text comprising 1,317 characters with spaces explaining Twitter will not lose the feeling of speed, creativity and brevity.
Washington, Jan 6 (Big Wire) The Social network Twitter that enables users to send and read short messages is poised to break the barrier of its 140-character limit soon.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that the word limit will be extended to 10,000 transferring Twitter into more of a “public blogging platform rather than one that is succinct and well-suited to quips and breaking news headlines”.
However, WSJ says quoting a person familiar with the matter, Twitter Inc. will try to retain the look and feel of the user timeline.
Extending the character limit in the tweets to boost user growth has been a matter of discussion in Twitter Inc. for last several months following feedback from users many of whom attach screenshots of longer texts to their tweets.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a screenshot of text comprising 1,317 characters with spaces explaining Twitter will not lose the feeling of speed, creativity and brevity.
“We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it…Instead, what if that text…was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That’s more utility and power,” he wrote.
Dorsey added that they are not going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people. “As long as it’s consistent with what people want to do, we’re going to explore it,” he said.
