Today (Jan 23, 2017) is the 120th birth anniversary of iconic freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid his tribute to Netaji on Twitter.

“I salute Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary. His valour played a major role in freeing India from colonialism…Netaji Bose was a great intellectual who always thought about the interests & wellbeing of the marginalised sections of society,” Modi tweeted.

The PM even made files relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose available on the Internet.

“Honoured that our Government got the opportunity to declassify files relating to Netaji Bose & fulfil a popular demand pending for decades,” he posted on the micro-blogging site, adding, “Files relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose are available on “.

Here are 10 facts about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose that will interest you:

1. Netaji was a patriot since childhood. In fact, he was expelled from Presidency College for allegedly assaulting Professor Oaten for his “anti-India comments”.

2. Post his graduation, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose went to England for Indian Civil Services (ICS) examinations. He ranked 4th in the merit list. However, Bose returned to India as he did not want to serve the British.

3. He was elected President of the Indian National Congress (INC) twice – in 1938 and 1939.

4. Bose was always a friend of the enemy’s enemy. He joined hands with the German and Japanese against the British.

When making friends with Germany, though he was non-supportive of Nazism, Bose was always willing to seek Adolf Hitler’s help in whatever way he could.

5. While fighting to free India, he was jailed at least 10 times during the period 1921-1941.

6. Though his views and path regarding India’s freedom struggle was different from the non-violent Mahatma Gandhi, it was the latter who described him as the “patriot of patriots”.

7. Bose served as the Mayor of Kolkata between 1930-1931, as per the Mayors’ list on the official website of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

8. He married an Austrian Catholic woman Emilie Schenkl in 1937. Their daughter Anita Bose Pfaff, born in 1942, is a noted economist.

9. His probable death in a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945 is still shrouded in mystery. There are many evidences that suggest Netaji survived the accident and continued to live in Russia for many years after that.

10. Some reports also suggest that he returned to India from Russia and continued to live anonymously as a saint under the name of Bhagwanji or Gumnami Baba in Uttar Pradesh.

Gumnami Baba died at Faizabad on September 16, 1985.
