The pilot study by the researchers and experts from the US-based University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Centre, the American Cancer Society and the e-Health Technology Programme suggested that the smartphone reminders can prompt people to move and exercise by lessening their sedentary behaviour.

The researchers studied the movement of 215 participants using accelerometers, that measures vibration, for seven days. All the participants were carrying smartphones for the entire period.

The study demonstrated that those carrying smartphones were more active after they were in boxed motivational health tips. The messages encouraged them to stand up and move besides reminding that sitting down for a long period is bad for health.

According to the study report published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, researchers Darla E. Kendzor and Kerem Shuval explored that the smartphone reminders appeared to be a promising strategy for reducing sedentary behaviour and increasing activity.

In fact working-class adults in the corporate sectors spend an average of about 8 waking hours per day being deskbound. It is expected that the smartphone reminder strategy may work wonder for them if they actually adhere it.

Another study published in Journal of Nutrition and Behavior had recently concluded that the smartphones can also be used to track the users’ food habits and diet plan. The cell phones can keep a record of what and how much should be eaten.

The study found that digital tracking was more effective and accurate way of keeping food records and those who maintained them managed to lose more weight.
