Scientists find way to turn carbon dioxide into usable fuel

The breakthrough can help us keep environment clean and reduce the use of fossil fuel that we burn in large amount every day to meet our energy needs.

Researchers have found a way to capture polluting carbon dioxide from air and convert it to useable fuel, according to science portal Phys.org.gas

Indian origin scientist G K Surya Prakash and others from University of California have shown how to capture harmful CO2 and convert it to methanol. The results they found were never achieved before.

Capturing of harmful CO2 and converting it to methanol as an alternative fuel to gasoline offer enormous environmental benefits.

The breakthrough can help us keep environment clean and reduce the use of fossil fuel that we burn in large amount every day to meet our energy needs.

Scientists have been exploring ways to convert carbon dioxide into useful products, but the choice of methanol is promising because it has been used for many purposes including by industries as a solvent and antifreeze.

The researchers are now working to find out how they can speed up the conversion process for faster production of methanol.

The study was published in the recent issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Several researches are on to capture harmful CO2 and put it into meaningful use. Recently, a Canadian startup company set up an “air capturing” plant to convert CO2 to pallets.
