The new study led by nutritional epidemiologist Martha Clare Morris at Rush University Medical Center in US’s Chicago have found that it rather protects against Alzheimer’s – an age related memory loss disorder, despite the increased mercury levels,  science portal AlertNet reported.

The researchers have based their finding after analysing 286 post-mortem brain autopsies performed on a cohort of individuals initially free of dementia.

The study was published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Mercury is a known neurotoxin considered harmful to brain health. The researchers wanted to see if consumption of seafood is linked to increased brain mercury levels in older adults.

They also wanted to examine if seafood consumption or brain mercury levels are linked with brain disorder. They found that seafood consumption reduced risks of Alzheimer’s.

However the study was based on the consumption of top ten the types of fish species which had low to moderate levels of mercury and comparable to levels previously reported for cortical brain regions.
