Parental depression could negatively affect the performance of children in school, a new study shows.

Depression is a condition in which a person may have persistent feeling of sadness, or guilt. It leads to disturbed sleep, low energy and poor concentration. It also contributes to a variety of physical and mental problems.

Hanyang Shen, a scientist at Drexel University in US and team analysed the data of more than a million children, of whom nearly fifty per cent were female.

They found that the children, whose mother and father were depressed at any time before the children’s final compulsory school year, had worse performance.

The study said the parental depression throughout a child’s life were associated with worse school performance at age 16 years.

The study results suggest parental depression may have a far-reaching effect on an important aspect of child development, with implications for future life course outcomes.

The study was published in JAMA Psychiatry.
