WhatsApp ending support for BlackBerry, Nokia phones

The company will end support for BlackBerry including BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7.1 by the end of this year.

smartphoneWhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging service is going to end its support for BlackBerry and Nokia operating system by the end of this year so that it can focus on popular mobile platform, the company said.

The company will end support for BlackBerry including BlackBerry 10,  Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7.1.

In a blog post the company said that the operating systems don’t offer the kind of capabilities WhatsApp needs to expand its app’s features in the future.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp” has stated in the blog post

For those who are using these mobile devices, it has recommended to upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 if they want to continue using WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is an application that allows Smartphone users to send unlimited text, audio and video messages to other users using a wifi or data connection.

Nearly a billion people are currently using it to stay in touch with their dear ones. It was acquired by Facebook two years ago.
