According to the latest study by the researchers at the University of Wurzburg in Germany, women having Mediterranean diet are less likely to have hip fracture post menopause.
The Mediterranean diet includes plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts besides the seafood, healthy fats, such as olive oil and herbs and spices.
The study on the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) published in JAMA Internal Medicine journal was conducted on 93,676 women in the age group of 50 to 79.
The researchers led by physician Bernhard Haring looked at the women’s diets and any fracture in their bones including the hip fracture over a period of more than 15 years.
They had supplied the WHI food frequency questionnaire to the participants to derive nutrient and food intake at baseline. It was found 2,121 women had experienced hip fractures.
The study found higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk for hip fractures.
Earlier the researchers had suggested about the beneficial effect of the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil in the primary prevention of breast cancer.
People having the diet also have a decreased risk for heart disease, depression, and dementia.
