10 home remedies for conjunctivitis

With the onset of summer, the most common disease that may affect you is conjunctivitis or pink eye. This viral infection is highly contagious.

The outermost layer of the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid swell up and in most cases, the cornea is affected.

The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are pain, burning, itchiness and redness of the eye, particularly around the cornea.

While doctors will prescribe antibiotics and steroid, here are 10 home remedies you may try for prevention as well as treatment of conjunctivitis or pink eye:

1. Tulsi or holy basil

Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, tulsi helps protect and heal eyes from conjunctivitis. Boil water. Soak tulsi leaves in it. Wash your eyes with it or soak cotton in it and give your eyes a warm compress.

2. Green tea

Green tea contains bioflavonoids that not only fight viral infections but also help relieve inflammation and irritation. Boil water. Dip a green tea bag in it and place it on the infected eye after it cools down a bit. You may also go for a green tea hot compress.

3. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera has antibacterial and antiviral properties. It reduces inflammation and speeds up the healing process. Put aloe vera gel around the eyes and eyelids once you suspect conjunctivitis or pink eye.

4. Turmeric

Full of anti-bacterial compounds, turmeric helps reduce inflammation. Boil a cup of water. Put two tablespoons of turmeric powder in it. Go for a warm compress of the eye with the mixture.

5. Neem oil

Neem oil is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and also soothes irritation. For relief from conjunctivitis or pink eye, put a little neem oil around the eyes and eyelids at bedtime.

6. Cilantro leaves

Another home cure for conjunctivitis lies in cilantro leaves. Blend some cilantro leaves in half cup water. Filter the mixture and apply the pulp on eyelids.

7. Coriander seeds

Take a teaspoon of coriander seeds. Steep it in a cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain it and apply the filtrate lukewarm on eyelids.

8. Goat milk

Probiotic-filled raw goat’s milk works wonder for conjunctivitis or pink eye. Dip a cotton ball in raw goat’s milk and apply all over your eyes.

9. Lemon juice

Put a drop of two of fresh lemon juice in affected eyes. Though it will cause the eyes to sting for sometime, lemon juice will not only reduce the irritation caused by conjunctivitis but also help cure the infection.

10. Cucumber

Cucumber has soothing properties. Cut cucumbers in round, thin slices and put them over closed eyelids.
