Yeddyurappa resigns ahead of Karnataka trust vote: Top developmentsAfter a two-day stint as Karnataka chief minister, BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday (May 19) resigned from his post avoiding a floor test in the state assembly.

Here are the top developments:

1. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B.S. Yeddyurappa took oath as the new Karnataka chief minister in Bengaluru on Thursday (May 17), hours after the Supreme Court refused to stay the swearing-in ceremony in a rare pre-dawn hearing.

2. The Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] combine had moved the apex court late Wednesday (May 16) against the BJP forming government in the southern state.

3. Pertinently, the BJP had support of 105 lawmakers, including an Independent, while the Congress and JD(S) combine has 117 legislators in the 224-member Karnataka assembly.

4. A support of 113 lawmakers is needed for majority. BS Yeddyurappa was given 15 days to prove his majority.

5. The Supreme Court on Friday (May 18) directed to hold a floor test in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 pm on Saturday (May 19) and live telecast the proceedings.

6. Till an hour before the floor test, Congress alleged that two of their lawmakers were “missing” and in probability had been “held captive” by the BJP at Goldfinch Hotel.

7. However, both Congress MLAs – Pratap Gowda Patil and Anand Singh – reached Karnataka Vidhana Soudha before 3.30pm amid tight security.

8. The Congress also released a series of audio tapes and accused BJP of trying to horse-trade MLAs. One of the tapes revealed conversation between BS Yeddyurappa and Congress MLA BC Patil, where the earlier was trying to bribe the latter to vote in his favour.

9. Ahead of the trust vote, BS Yeddyurappa resigned after giving an emotional speech in the assembly.

10. In his speech, BS Yeddyurappa said: “I am used to struggle throughout my life. I have never practiced opportunistic politics. I lose nothing if I lose power. I am going to the Governor’s house right away and tender my resignation.”

11. He further said: “The people of Karnataka have already voted against the Congress. Whereas, the aim of my government was to work for the farmers and Dalits. The Congress-JD(S) alliance will be against the mandate.”

12. BS Yeddyurappa signed off with a promise of 28 on 28 seats in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

13. With BS Yeddyurappa resigning, the trust vote was cancelled.

14. Meanwhile, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy said he is “extremely confident” of becoming new chief minister of Karnataka and is awaiting an invitation from the Governor’s House.

15. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah tweeted: “Dear Brothers & Sisters of Karnataka, I thank you for your verdict. It has been an honour to serve you as Chief Minister for the past 5 years. I am confident the Congress Party & the new Government we form, will continue to work for the best interests of our state & our people.”

16. West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee said it is a win of democracy. In a tweet, she said: “Democracy wins. Congratulations Karnataka. Congratulations DeveGowda Ji, Kumaraswamy Ji, Congress and others. Victory of the ‘regional’ front.”
