Beware! Stress can get you cancer, finds study

The National Center for Biotechnology Information said in the year 2020, India will have 1,148,757 cancer cases versus 979,786 in 2010.

stressAdmit it or not, modern lifestyle is threatened by two factors – stress and cancer. And if a latest finding is to be believed, both are inter-related.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information said in the year 2020, India will have 1,148,757 cancer cases versus 979,786 in 2010.

This is quite scary because as we know all human bodies carry dormant cancer cells which are usually activated under favourable conditions.

Monash University researchers have found that chronic, persistent stress makes the body undergo such physiological changes that makes cancer cells spread faster to other parts.

Dr Erica Sloan and Dr Caroline Le led a team of researchers who experimented on mice and found chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which in turn affects lymphatic function and rapidifies the spread of cancer cells.

The study was published in Nature Communications.

It says chronic stress not only increases the number of lymphatic vessels draining from the tumour, but increase flow in existing vessels. Even National Cancer Institute (NIH) has found links between psychological stress and cancer.

It says on its website people under stress may develop certain behaviors. They could resort to smoking, overeating, or drink alcohol and such acts increase a person’s risk for cancer.

However, the Australian researchers claimed that blood-pressure drug beta-blocker propranolol can block the adrenaline rush and prevent cancer cells from spreading.
