Aerobic exercises may cut Alzheimer’s risk

The new study by Cyrus A. Raji and other researchers has shown that a lifestyle intervention focusing on physical activities such as walking, dancing and gardening can improve memory health.

The investigators analysed physical activities of 876 people, age 78 on average and correlate it to their brain volumes.

They found that increasing their physical activities reduced their risk of Alzheimer’s dementia by fifty percent. Even those who had mild cognitive impairment associated with the disorder also benefited.

This research, conducted by researchers at University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh, is the first to show that virtually any type of aerobic physical activity can improve brain structure and reduce Alzheimer’s risk.

“We have no magic bullet cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Our focus needs to be on prevention.” lead researcher Cyrus A. Raji, MD, Ph.D. has stated. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
