Home remedies for dengue fever

Dengue fever is a tropical disease caused by the dengue virus transmitted via bites of Aedes mosquitoes. Symptoms of this life-threatening disease include high fever, headache, rash, muscle pain and joint pain.

Dengue fever is spreading rapidly across India, especially in West Bengal, Odisha and Kerala. The toll is already up at 13 in West Bengal with a 10-year-old succumbing to the viral disease at a Kolkata hospital on Saturday (Aug 6).

West Bengal Director of Health Services Biswaranjan Satpathy said on Sunday (Aug 7), as many as 112 new cases of dengue have been reported from different parts of the state, mostly from Serampore city in Hooghly district in the last 24 hours.

Right now there are at least 1,495 dengue patients in the state.Similarly,  Odisha has reported as many as 3,264 cases followed by Kerala with 2,252 cases.

While you need to take precautions against mosquito bites, here are some home remedies that may help you prevent the disease:

1. Goat milk:

Goat milk mainly contains Selenium (Se). This will help you increase your platelets counts. One of the main complications of dengue is decreasing platelets.

2. Papaya leaves:

Grind a papaya leaf with water and have it in empty stomach. Even the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) promotes this ancient remedy from granny’s kitchen as a preventive against dengue.

3. Neem leaves:

Neem has great blood purifying qualities. It can be used as a preventive as well as a supportive therapy for dengue. You may soak and boil neem leaves in water and drink the brew. It will help you increase blood platelet count.

4. Coriander leaves:

These leaves are high in Vitamin C and is a natural tonic to bring down dengue fever.

5. Basil leaves (tulsi):

Basil has natural insecticidal properties that help boost immunity and ease the symptoms of dengue fever. It can be used both as a preventive and a supportive therapy.

6. Water:

The magic of H2O works on dengue as well. Drink plenty of water to keep your entire system hydrated. This will not only bring down the body temperature but also help soothe headaches and muscle cramps.

7. Fenugreek (methi):

Fenugreek acts as a natural sedative that helps ease the pains of dengue fever. Soak the leaves in water and drink.

8. Turmeric (haldi):

Turmeric is known for its healing properties. It increases metabolism and speeds up the recovery. Mix turmeric in hot milk and drink.

9. Black pepper (kali mirch):

Black pepper has great anti-bacterial properties. About 2 grams of black pepper a day may help you keep dengue away.

10. Orange juice:

Being rich in antioxidants and vitamins like Vitamin C, orange juice is an ideal remedy for treating the secondary symptoms of dengue fever.
