India’s versatile actress Sridevi who made her debut as a child artist in a Tamil film some 49 years ago passed away on Saturday after accidental drowning in the bathtub in Dubai where she was attending a marriage function.

She was 54. Her sudden death came as a surprise for everyone leaving the film industries and the country in a state of shock. She is survived by her producer husband Boney Kapoor and her two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi.

Here are some little-known facts about this veteran Bollywood queen who stunned the fans with her performances during her career that spanned for more than four decades.

Born on 13 August 1963 in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, she made her acting debut as an infant Lord Muruga in 1967 Tamil film in Kandhan Karunai. She continued as a child artist and acted in numerous Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films.

She was named as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan upon birth after her father Ayyapan Yanger, a lawyer and mother Rajeswari Yanger. Her nickname was Puppy.

She even played the role of a step mother in 1976 Tamil film Moondru Mudichu in which superstar Rajinikanth appeared as her son.

She made her Hindi films debut in 1975 as a child actor with the smash-hit ‘Julie’ in which she played the younger sister of the lead actress and as a heroine in Solva Sawan in 1979.

The Hindi films that earned her critical acclaim include Himmatwala (1983) “Mawaali” (1983), “Tohfa” (1984), “Mr India” (1987) and “Chandni” (1989).

Her versatile roles in “Sadma” (1983), “ChaalBaaz” (1989), “Lamhe” (1991), and “Gumrah” (1993) were widely appreciated by the audiences. She has given several blockbusters.

According to reports, she got married to Mithun Chakraborty secretly in 1985 but that did not work. She married to Boney Kapoor in later 1996. She was pregnant before her marriage to Boney Kapoor.

She reportedly got her nose and lips corrected to get a perfect look.

Sridevi was offered a role in Jurassic Park, an American science-fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg which she had rejected. She had also rejected roles in Hindi movies including Kaamyab, Hoshiyar, Khudgarz, Vijay, Ajooba.

She was not comfortable in Hindi when she made her debut in Bollywood. Dubbing artist Naaz dubbed for her in the film. Even for film Aakhiri Raasta Rekha had dubbed for her.

Although Sridevi was a shy person off-screen, she was a completely different person before the camera.

She was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour in 2013 by the Government of India.

Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie Zero would be her last movie in which she will be seen in a special appearance.
