Chaitra Navratri 2018 begins from Sunday (Mar 18).
The festival
The nine-day festival falls in the month of Chaitra and is dedicated to nine forms of Goddess Shakti.
The dates
Chaitra Navratri 2018 is being celebrated from Mar 18 to Mar 26. The festival coincided with Gudi Padwa celebration in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh.
Day 1 of the festival is called Pratipada and falls on Mar 18. Day 2 (Dwitiya) is on Mar 19, Day 3 (Tritiya) is on Mar 20, Day 4 (Chaturthi) on Mar 21, Day 5 (Panchami) on Mar 22, Day 6 (Shashthi) on Mar 23, Day 7 (Saptami) on Mar 24, Day 8 (Ashtami/Navami) on Mar 25.
Unlike other years, Ashtami and Navami fall on the same day.
Dashami is on Mar 26.
The forms of Goddess Shakti who are worshipped:
Day 1 Shailputri is worshipped.
Day 2 Brahmacharini is worshipped.
Day 3 Chandraghata is worshipped.
Day 4 Kushmanda is worshipped.
Day 5 Skandamata is worshipped.
Day 6 Katyayani is worshipped.
Day 7 Kaalratri is worshipped.
Day 8 Mahagauri is worshipped.
Day 9 Siddhidaatri is worshipped.
Food and fasting
Devotees generally fast throughout the day and take food and water only after performing the puja.
Other than fruits and milk, Navratri special foods like Kuttu ki Poori (Buckwheat poori), Singhare (water caltrop) Ka Halwa, Singhare (water caltrop) ke Pakore, Sabudana (sago) Vada and Sabudana khichdi (sago hotchpotch) are prepared.
