Approving chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s proposal to rename the state, the West Bengal assembly has passed a resolution to change the name to Bangla.
Here is all you need to know about the development:
1. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had long proposed to change the state’s name to Bangla to climb the alphabetical order of state names in which West Bengal features last as of now.
2. West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee moved the resolution in the assembly recently and it was passed unanimously.
3. As per the resolution, the state will be called Bangla in Bengali, Hindi and English.
4. Though the West Bengal assembly cleared the proposal, the final renaming process will be a long drawn one since it requires a constitutional amendment.
5. After this new proposal is received by the Ministry of Home Affairs, it will ready a note for the Cabinet for an amendment to the Schedule 1 of the constitution.
6. The constitution amendment Bill will be introduced in the parliament. It has to be approved by majority of the house.
7. After this, the president will give his nod to it, making the new name official.
8. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said Bangla is chosen as the new state name as “it is the identity of Bengal”.
9. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state, however, said it preferred ‘Paschim Bango’ (Bengali version of West Bengal), instead of ‘Bangla’.
10. Pertinently, in 2011, the Centre had rejected Mamata Banerjee’s move to rename West Bengal as ‘Paschim Bango’.
11. The Centre had also rejected the state government’s move to have three names of the state – Bangla (in Bengali), Bangal (in Hindi) and Bengal (in English).
