Mumbai: New initiative targets 3K jobs, 10K skilling options for Dharavi locals

After the revamp in the next few years, Mumbai’s eyesore Dharavi is slated to transform – from an ugly duckling to a gorgeous swan – akin to the famed fairy tale (1843) penned by the legendary story-teller from Denmark, Hans Christen Andersen (1805-1875).

 

Mumbai, Jan. 08 (BigWire): Aiming to provide 3,000 jobs and 10,000 skilling opportunities by Dec. 2025, the Dharavi Social Mission (DSM) opened its first Resource Centre in the heart of Asia’s biggest slum, intending to transforming the lives of the locals, today.

The centre shall serve as an integrated hub for education, health, jobs and skills development and attempt to make their daily lives a bit easier in Dharavi, now awaiting a massive redevelopment initiative through the Adani Group.

5 critical points:

The DSM was launched by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt. Ltd. (NMDPL) in June 2024 and will strengthen bonds with the local community, its culture, aspirations, through easy access to essential services/opportunities.

  • The DSM-RC will tap the talents, hone skills, sharpen knowledge, improve physical and mental health of the locals to enhance their personal and professional lives while ensuring a dignified living for the estimated 1.20 million people there.
  • Till date, DSM has organized a series of events for small, medium and large Self-Help Groups (SHG) to improve their incomes with market linkage and digital connect, inspiring youth to explore newer avenues through ‘Yuva Samvaad’, etc.
  • Free government health benefit schemes worth Rs 10 crore have been provided to seniors through ‘Lok Vikas’, youth got employment via targeted job fairs and 200 enjoyed the fruits of around 177 government schemes, 200 acquired skills enabling a stable income sources and another 200 joined in various awareness campaigns including stress management and pranic healing.
  • Besides skilling 10,000 and giving employment to 3,000 more, the DSM-RC will attempt to double the Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries here by 2025-end.

Dharavi, in the central part of the country’s commercial capital, was notorious as the city’s ‘underbelly’ for over a century, but is now on the threshold of a massive redevelopment initiative, courtesy, NMDPL (Adani Group).
