We can also make a difference by using eco-friendly, animal-free cleaning products and supporting accommodations and tour operators that prioritise sustainability and animal welfare.

While small changes are often overlooked, they can profoundly impact our lives and the world around us. From simple acts of kindness to conscious lifestyle choices, every action, no matter how little, weaves into the larger tapestry of progress. Collectively, these small actions can lead to healthier lives, a more harmonious society, and a sustainable planet.

Adopting a vegan lifestyle is one such impactful change, as it involves eliminating all products that hurt animals. Following a plant-based diet is relatively easy for Indians as it has been a part of our culture for centuries.

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds not only has immense health benefits but also contributes to a more equitable food system.

A vegan diet, characterised by the exclusion of all animal products, offers a myriad of health benefits. Reducing the consumption of saturated and cholesterol-rich foods, such as red meat and dairy products, significantly lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

The plant-based diets also keep one’s blood sugar levels in check and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, also support stress management and overall well-being.

The Vegan diets often emphasise whole, unprocessed foods, which are linked to lower rates of obesity, high blood pressure, and chronic inflammation.

In recent years, making plant-based choices has become easier due to the wide availability of dairy substitutes, like vegan milk, cheese, yoghurt, and ice cream, and meat substitutes like tofu, tempeh, and seitan.

The global plant-based sector is booming due to high consumer demand with Asia having the fastest growth rate of +85% CAGR between 2018 and 2022.

Beyond the personal health benefits, a vegan lifestyle has a profound impact on the environment. Deforestation for grazing land and feed cultivation releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, with the livestock industry accounting for 7.1 GT CO2, equivalent to 14.5% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the digestive processes of livestock, particularly ruminants like cows and sheep, produce enteric methane emissions, representing 30% of total global emissions. The livestock industry also causes water pollution.

Vegan diets, on the other hand, have a much smaller environmental footprint. They require fewer land and water resources, and their cultivation generally produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, plant-based agriculture can contribute to soil health and biodiversity. By eliminating products obtained from animals, individuals can make a tangible difference in combating climate change and protecting our planet for future generations.

Vegan principles extend well beyond food and can be applied even in industries like beauty and fashion. For instance, many beauty products contain animal-derived substances, which not only fuel a demand for animal agriculture but also compromise the welfare of farmed animals.

Notably, the beauty industry thrives on torturing innocent animals, even though cosmetic testing is banned in India.

The Humane Society estimates that approximately five hundred thousand animals are killed annually for cosmetic testing.

These tests cause immense suffering to animals, such as exposing their eyes to harsh chemicals, removing their fur for testing, applying irritants to their sensitive skin, or forcing them to ingest harmful substances. After enduring these painful experiments, the animals are often killed.

Conversely, choosing plastic-free, recyclable, vegan, and cruelty-free personal care products—like soaps, shampoos, and lotions—helps protect animals and reduces environmental impact through water conservation and lower carbon emissions.

Additionally, the industry’s reliance on certain plant-based ingredients, like palm oil, which is found in almost 70% of beauty products, fuels deforestation, which threatens endangered species like the Sumatran tiger, displaces wildlife and disrupts ecosystems.

When applying vegan principles to beauty products, it’s important to prioritise sustainable, ethically sourced ingredients that protect animals and the environment.”

Our fashion choices have a bigger environmental impact than we realise. Opting for sustainable, cruelty-free fashion made from plant-based materials like cotton, linen, or recycled polyester directly contributes to a healthier and more sustainable as producing animal-derived ingredients, including beeswax, lanolin, and gelatin, drives climate change, deforestation, and water pollution.

We can also make a difference by using eco-friendly, animal-free cleaning products and supporting accommodations and tour operators that prioritise sustainability and animal welfare.

Lifestyle changes can seem overwhelming, but joining online communities or local groups to share experiences and seek advice can make the process more manageable and enjoyable.

Having a supportive network makes it easier to stay motivated and committed. Celebrating small victories along the way and rewarding yourself for progress can help reinforce new habits. Staying informed about the latest climate solutions and individual actions that make an impact can also provide a sense of purpose and empowerment.

Every step, no matter how small, plays a part in creating a more compassionate and sustainable world—because meaningful change always begins from within.
