NABARD Chairman Launches WASH Awareness Campaign

The first phase of the campaign will target 40 block-level camps in climate-vulnerable areas across seven states.

On World Water Day, NABARD collaborated with its subsidiary NABSAMRUDDHI to launch a nationwide Climate Ready WASH (Water, sanitation and hygiene) funding awareness campaign targeting women JLG (Joint Liability Group) borrowers of Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs).

The campaign launched by NABARD Chairman Shaji K.V. aims to educate rural women about climate-resilient WASH solutions and the financing options available to them. This initiative aligns with the theme of World Water Day 2024, “Water for Peace.”

WASH Funding Empowers Rural Women

NABSAMRUDDHI has been a key player in providing concessional WASH loans to promote sustainable livelihoods for rural women. To date, they’ve provided Rs. 400 crore in WASH funding, benefiting over 60,000 borrowers, 90% of whom are women.

Climate-Ready WASH Solutions for Vulnerable Areas

The first phase of the campaign will target 40 block-level camps in climate-vulnerable areas across seven states. These camps will educate women borrowers about climate-smart WASH solutions, including climate-resistant toilets, rainwater harvesting for borewell recharge and storage, and solarization of water pumps.

Collaboration for Long-Term Sustainability

NABSAMRUDDHI recognizes the importance of collaboration in addressing climate change and its impact on WASH. To further this goal, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) to work together on financing climate-smart WASH solutions.
