After serving a tenure of nine years, Axis Bank Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shikha Sharma will be stepping down from her post on Dec 31, 2018.
Her current term was to end on May 31.
But the Board of Directors of Axis Bank, the third largest private sector lender, had on December extended her term by three more years, till May 2021.
India’s central banking institution, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), expressed concern over reappointing Shikha Sharma for a fourth term, amid a rise in bad loans.
Days after, Axis Bank issued a statement saying Shikha Sharma has requested to shorten her term to Dec 31, showing “personal reasons”.
In a stock exchange filing, Axis Bank said: “Shikha Sharma, Managing Director & CEO of the Bank has requested the Board to reconsider the period of her re-appointment as the Managing Director & CEO of the Bank be revised from 1st June 2018 up to 31st December 2018.”
“The Board has accepted her request, subject to the approval of the RBI,” the Axis Bank added.
