WhatsApp to be completely free

WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging service is going to drop its $1 subscription fee, that some users were paying after first year of their use, to make the service free for all users.whatsapp

Its founder Jan Koum announced this on Monday at a conference in Munich. The change is expected to happen within next few weeks.

“For many years, we’ve asked some people to pay a fee for using WhatsApp after their first year. As we’ve grown, we’ve found that this approach hasn’t worked well” confirming the development, Whatsapp also said in a blog post .

“Many WhatsApp users don’t have a debit or credit card number and they worried they’d lose access to their friends and family after their first year. So over the next several weeks, we’ll remove fees from the different versions of our app and WhatsApp will no longer charge you for our service” it has stated.

Whatsapp has however ruled out that it will introduce any third party ad or spam for revenue.

Although in the blog post it has informed that it will test tools that will help people use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations, it was not clear how it will create a revenue stream.

WhatsApp is an application that allows Smartphone users to send unlimited text, audio and video messages to other users using a wifi or data connection.

Nearly a billion people are currently using it to stay in touch with their dear ones. It was acquired by Facebook two years ago.
